Roses for the "what a lovely thing a rose is" speech one assumes. Tulips in the Language of Flowers = "declaration of love" and variegated/striped ones = "beautiful eyes", apparently :-)

As for the tulips, I read somewhere that they actually originate from Central Asia and they are as close a national flower to Afghanistan as it gets.
