[Mod Note: We are once again indebted to two marvellous pinch-hitters for ensuring that everyone received a gift and for saving what sanity remains to the mods. Without wonderful people like you, this simply would not be possible. Thank you!]
Title: Daring to Act
Recipient: The Fantastic Pinch-hitters of Round 6
Author: [redacted]
Rating: PG
Characters, including any pairing(s): Mr Sherlock Holmes, Dr John Watson
Warnings: None
Summary: At the conclusion of a case, Watson wonders what the consequences of his actions will be.
I watched Holmes approach with a mixture of relief and trepidation. He appeared unscathed, and relief gained ascendancy. I had feared for him when he failed to contact me as he said he would. When twenty-four hours passed in silence, concern had turned to worry. Still I waited, and might have gone on doing so had one of Holmes’ Irregulars not reported in with the most alarming news. Darnell’s gang meant to act soon, and would wreak savage revenge on our client and his young family.
Holmes expected me to wait for his word, and normally his wishes would be paramount with me. But I could not remain idle with four innocent lives in the balance. I wired Lestrade and set off to try and protect those I could.
Lestrade acted with dispatch. I successfully thwarted an attack on our client. And here was Holmes, and despite these successes, I wondered what his reaction might be. On previous occasions where I had not followed his instructions, his reaction had been scathing.
Holmes gave me one of his rare smiles. “Darnell’s gang is smashed, but it would have been a Pyrrhic victory indeed without your timely intervention. I could not contact you, and could only hope you would act as I might wish. And so you did. Bravo, my dear Watson. Bravo.”
Title: Essential to the Process
Recipient: The Fantastic Pinch-hitters of Round 6
Author: [redacted]
Rating: PG
Characters, including any pairing(s): Mr Sherlock Holmes, Dr John Watson
Warnings: None
Summary: Logic requires certain essentials.
"It is essential to the process," Sherlock Holmes barked preemptively across the fog as the door opened.
Dr. Watson coughed upon entering the sitting room. The reaction was understandable. Were he himself not the smokestack emitting the smothering tobacco cloud, Holmes would have choked too. He was well into his third pipe of the day, and yet the case of Admiral Osterman's silver pocketwatch had still somehow not resolved itself in his mind.
Despite the atmosphere, Watson took his favored seat by the fireplace in Holmes' old chair from Montague Street. It had been been moved to their new quarters only a few months ago, but the furniture found different ownership here at Baker Street. The theft was strangely pleasing.
Watson took out his notebook to write. His motion opening the book was brisk, deliberate. The would-be author had an idea. Likely regarding the smoking habit. Colour, Watson called it.
Holmes took another puff of the excellent Turkish shag.
Colour.
Silver.
Silver was not only a metal, it was a colour. Other metals were colored silver as well. Like platinum. Or...
Or aluminium.
"We have to get to the foundry."
Holmes felt unsure of whether to credit the first link in his chain of logic to the tobacco or to Watson. It hardly mattered. They were essential to the process, both.
