[With apologies for the two misfires, for those puzzled]
Herewith the complete summary of who gave what to whom, plus a little bonus ficlet by yours truly. Please do now go and acknowledge comments - and your gift, if you have not done so already. Meanwhile, in 1903 at 221b, Baker Street..
"All done, Holmes?"
“All done. The pantechnicon van outside is positively groaning under the weight of twenty-two years’ worth of our accumulated worldly goods. We must have pity on the poor horses. Just as well we aren’t taking any more furniture.”
“Just as well I persuaded you to toss out all the unnecessaries before packing up. Although I noticed a suspicious number of unlabelled boxes being loaded from the back yard this morning…”
“It was very good of Mrs Hudson to let us have our old chairs to set beside our new hearth, don’t you think?”
“Mine is riddled with woodworm in one leg.”
“Really? Mine is as sound as ever it was. Still, no matter. A dab of creosote and it will be good as new, my boy.”
“It will infest the entire house, Holmes. We’re taking it to Sussex for politeness’ sake, and when we get there, it’s going on the fire.”
“This from the man who keeps in his wallet a ‘lucky’, bent, silver rupee given him by an orderly at Peshawar hospital. It pains me to say it but you have grown tiresomely prosaic of late, John.”
“I am being practical, because, as ever, you refuse to be. You won’t get round me with ‘John’, either.”
“And did I mention bad-tempered? Take some laudanum for the leg. Not the wooden one, although given a large enough dose, you may cease to care about that either.”
“Remind me again why I agreed to come with you?”
“You know my methods. You have long and, ah, intimate experience of my powers of persuasion. You were, if memory serves, present at the commission of the crime. However I must remind you that I am not obliged under English common law actually to incriminate myself.”
“You…incorrigible man.”
“Your servant, doctor.”
“The train leaves at ten past the hour. Holmes, we really must go.”
“In a moment. You have written just a fraction of it down. Yet there remain countless hours, innumerable events and sights, unrecorded except for memory and imagination. A little while and so much that happened in this room, this house, will be among them.”
“I took a photograph, before we packed. To take with us.”
“And you will publish more stories, I don’t doubt. Nevertheless, it is memory that will conjure up Baker Street, 221b, Mr Sherlock Holmes, the world’s only consulting detective, and the long-suffering John H Watson, M.D., from now on. After that, imagination.”
