Dear wonderful wonderful anon (well, suppose you're not really anonymous anymore...), I am so terribly sorry not to have commented with my appreciation before! I live in NY, and life has been extremely hectic lately what with the Frankenstorm, evacuations and lack of power.

This is SPECTACULAR. I love how the case allows Holmes to show off his violin skills, especially the bit where he breaks character, "finally receiving the recognition he never knew he sought." And of course Watson can tell immediately when Holmes makes the subtle shift from Bennetti to himself as an artist. Perfect. :)

I also really liked how you included Mary and little tidbits of Watson and Mary's domestic life. The way you bookend the story with Mary's ongoing effort to "gentrify" Watson is delightful and humorous. Even the fact that Watson accidentally leaves Mary behind at the scene of the crime seems true to character--I could picture his and Holmes' expressions of horror when they realized perfectly! It's so nice to read a story in which Watson maintains his relationship with Holmes and Mary at the same time, without tension or discomfort--this is just how I imagine things working out in canon, with Watson happily in love with each of them: one as a beloved wife, the other as an equally beloved friend.

Thank you so much for providing the perfect antidote to a dreary week! xx Numbers
