Oh, *thank you*, dear anon. So much to love here. That you chose one of the less-frequently-referenced canon stories and tied it so deftly to one of the most well-known pleases me to no end. Love the accord both unspoken and lovingly sung - how many unconventional pairs must have made music their coded love language - that binds Holmes and Watson here throughout, and the two wounded but healing ladies making common cause. Working the Sussex retirement in a quite novel way was another bonus.

Lastly: "My eyes were dry, but I've always been one of those regrettable types whose distress shades more nervous than melancholy". Same, a Watson though I surely be and not a Holmes.
