Actually, I came up with the idea for the fic because I love baking. Obviously, I am a fan of ACD's stories and adaptations. So, when I got the prompt, I thought: Holmes loves Watson... it's grey autumn day... let's bake a cake :)
Then, obviously, I remembered my uni days, and then I thought: no, it's not like when we nowadays bake Victorian recipes. Sure, I could go for the "fairytale" but that isn't me.
Therefore: "something sweet, something extra" but only rose tinted because Watson is a hopeless romantic (and Holmes is hopelessly in love with him ;))
Every paragraph has the restricted (no man in their own kitchen), sometimes grim reality (yes, illegal ingridients for profit was sadly a very real, often deadly thing) of Victorian Times, on top of the work that went into such tasks (see: description of kitchen, and see: the "new" things like indoor plumbing and electricity), but yes, it celebrates the small things.
