What a lovely meditation. I love philosophy and theology, and it was wonderful to see this dream-like interlude of inner contemplation. The unexamined life is not worth living, and I think Holmes's hiatus was in its way the most unexamined time of his life for him, as he made his decisions too desperately and too single-mindedly, as this story beautifully points out.

I've always felt that Holmes was very wrong to hide his survival from Watson, and I love stories in which he is given the opportunity to realize that. Thanks very much for sharing this.
