Oh, anon. There are gifts, and then there are gifts. I can't believe you made this for me. It's so perfect, exactly everything I asked for, and so much more. I put a lot of ideas into my prompt to broaden the possibilities – but you ordered off the entire menu. Oh my God, everything is here, and it is, and I really can't use this word enough, perfect. Where to start about how wonderful this story is?
First, characters: The characterization is phenomenal. I want to kiss absolutely every single person in this story from Holmes and Watson of course, to Mrs. Hudson, down to the knowing barman and sweet Mary in just a photo. I have to admit, some of those kisses may not be so chaste. Everyone is so themselves, and so decent and, as uncomfortable as Holmes would find the word, loving. Your Holmes is exquisite. More than I can say, I loved being inside his mind, looking out from his eyes, and, God, being in love with John Watson with his heart. MMMMF. There just aren't words for it.
Second, plot: You took an idea that had been thumping around fruitlessly inside my head for months and wove it into a thing of absolute beauty. I love it and I'm jealous of it – it's just so good. Every detail is fabulous. Holmes' dreams, for instance, are amazing. The dream logic is exactly right – doors appearing out of nowhere, bizarre monsters and incongruous talk, not being able to stop it even if you know you're dreaming. You even gave me some horror elements (!!!) in there, along with a fabulous reference. The Dracula thing… so great! The reference is awesome to make just in general, but you really put it over the top by a) never mentioning the title explicitly – the "boxes and boxes of earth" is a marvelous tell and so creepy, and b) making Holmes embarrassed to death over the stupidity of it, which was hilarious and so in character I could die.
Third, the delicious H/W. This story is such a masterful blend of warm and hot. The entire courtship is gorgeous. I love so many things about it. The circling around each other, knowing the outcome will be good, but having no idea how to get there. Holmes, so uncomfortable with his own feelings, trying to learn to accept love from outside, and Watson, always there to gently try to give it to him. And when they finally do come together… Ohhhhhh. Watson's fingers against Holmes' buttons, then slipping between… his breath coming fast at Holmes' back… the first kiss, laid at the nape of Holmes' neck… Uhhhh… if you'll excuse me a moment…
Anyway, the point is, I am over the moon about this story, anon. I want you to write all of my random fantasy plot ideas. I want you to keep supplying me with such addictive amazingness forever. I'm just going to have to keep you on retainer, I guess, no other way around it. Name your price!
