Yeah, I think this exchange needed some angst. Actually, I think this perfectly expresses the feel of the song: after all, she has heartache because her love left her. So doing this was very clever.
Very sad that Holmes took such offense :( and for such a long time! In character, of course, but still. I guess he needed time to accept. I get the feeling that Watson posted those stories with Milverton as retaliation, when every other attempt at communication failed. But even that didn't work.
But finally in the end he replied! I was on the edge of my seat like Watson, hoping that maybe things would turn out okay in the end. The ending was nice :) now they need to make up and grow old in Sussex, and all will be well with the world. Thanks, anon!
