Love this! I love the shining lamplight, Holmes's trailing arm, and Watson ready to spring into action. That lean of his with the gun out- it's a little bit sexy. Rowrr.
I love pencil sketches more than I can say, and this one is awesome; Holmes spying and his outstreched hand ready to signal Watson to make good use of his abilities.
Love the coiled energy of this piece - not the actual moment when they spring upon their prey but the moment just before, a crouching tiger and a (poorly) hidden dragon.
The story it illustrates is evoked even before the piece is read.
To those wondering, if this is based on a story it's one I don't know!
It's wonderfully evocative of a narrative, though. I'm imagining this to be set near midnight in the pitch dark, and perhaps Holmes and Watson are planning to follow the druids down into the the cavern that I imagine is under that barrow... are we dealing with stolen artefacts? Human sacrifice?! What has attracted the great detective to the case? Love the balance in this drawing, pulling my eye from the foreground to the background.
Definitely makes me want to write a fic based on this picture. Thank you so much, anon!
I love the mystery of this. The scene is tense -- Watson has his revolver ready, and Holmes is ready to signal him to move. Makes me want to know all of the details of this case! Great work, and extra points for reminding me of Jeremy Brett out on the moors in a Granada episode!

I suppose there's a story behind the picture?
