I love how you started this with 'John',(because Holmes calling Watson by his Christian name uughhh my heart), and then crushed me to pieces with the rest of the story. Holmes' adventures usually sounds mysterious and exciting but he is downright lonely and miserable in this.

It's good to be reminded that Watson was most likely not the only one who 'suffered' during the great hiatus.
