Oh, yes, Victorian mentalism! So awesome. I don't know if you intended it, but "Cranwell" the would-be psychic immediately made me think of The Amazing Criswell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amazing_Criswell) (best known for Plan 9 from Outer Space), which was just great -- I pictured him for all the dialogue. ;)

The confrontation between Cranwell and Watson is fabulous. Watson holds his own well in especially bad circumstances -- drugged and versus a professional con man, one even Sherlock Holmes knows to be wary of. Gotta love Watson, man of action. A punch and quick ghostly explanation gets the job done nicely.
