Crikey, this is brilliant! ^^ Thank you so much, anon - I am an embarrassingly lucky girl ^^"
Like laurose8, I admire that first paragraph - the way Watson talks amusingly pragmatically about what must be a rather trying friendship at times. I love the way he takes centre stage in this story and demonstrates what an intelligent, brave and capable man he is. That's such a great moment when, from our point of view, he punches Cranwell out of the blue - everything has come together for Watson but we still don't know what's going on. And it's a satisfying answer when we eventually find out.
I have a good deal of respect for ACD's spiritualist beliefs and the personal and historical circumstances surrounding the development of those beliefs. (Though I don't share them and I think he was plainly fooling himself.) But considering SUSS, it seems unlikely his creations would believe in that sort of thing. And I'm sure ACD would approve of a straightforward hoaxer getting his comeuppance.
Btw, you also get bonus points from me for Watson thinking about Mary being amused about the escapade her husband was taking part in, and for using "harrumph", and "ipecacuanha" ^^ (My father used to go on about the stuff - but I think his family used it as an expectorant, not for the use poor Watson puts it to ^^")
