Oh, I don't think that they are contradictory genres at all. The mood of some Holmesian tales can get quite spooky, and then you have that Victorian atmosphere, gaslight, fog, strange creatures upon the moor, tragic romance... it fits quite well. ;)

(Not that Holmes would ever agree.)

Those books are easily available in Germany, it's not some obscure little-known series for insiders. Maybe that'll make it easier!
