I would not say the pace is that different from modern storytelling. It simply isn't as action-packed as we are used to encounter in nowadays literature. Which is actually quite lovely, if I can state my opinion.
I think that most of us has a weak spot for Victorian literature in general anyway, so there's no need for worrying.
