This is wonderful. The smoke, Holmes giving in to emotion, and the words left unsaid are definitely points which stand out for me as well.

Watson's scolding is perfect, that's just a classic moment - Really, Holmes? :-)

It started as a way more wordy thing but I slowly (i.e. anxiously) removed bits of dialogue, good to know it's been for the best. The scolding is perhaps my favourite plot device. Thank you!!
